Goal Statement: To immerse my students in an organization or some type of involvement on campus that helps them adapt to URI and have fun.
Activities/Resources: Have students make a flyer representing a club or team they are interested in. They will need to tell when the meetings are, where they are located, and a little bit about what the organization does. It could be anything from an intramural sport to the chess club!
Tell them about organizations I am involved in.
Show the students how to check online for a list of all clubs and organizations on campus.
Evidence: I will include my student’s flyers for their organization of choice. I will also bring in pictures of them presenting their flyers to the class. I will provide information on clubs I am involved in that I presented in class.
The following evidence is a flyer for a club one of our students created. She presented her flyer to the class for URI's Surf Club. I also included pictures of some of our students actually presenting the flyers they had made. In class I showed our students my resume so I included that as well.
This assignment was important to my URI 101 because there is nothing more valuable then getting involved on campus. I wanted my students become passionate about something and I wanted them to love URI just as much as I do.
The purpose of the activity was to get our students involved in things outside of the classroom. I wanted to enhance their URI experience and involvement is the best way. With the making of the flyers, I wanted our students to go and research a club or sport that they were interested in. What I had hoped was that they would find when meetings were or games and would take the initiative to go to them. I made our students present the flyer to everyone else in the class. My thoughts with this were that everyone would have been interested in something different and presented that. Then, when other students saw these clubs and sports, they would know exactly what they were about and would want to join as well. Some of the flyers were very interesting and it was not hard to tell that the students had actually taken the time to research the club or intramural sport. Others you could see that research had not been done at all.
Through this activity I learned that not every student wants to get involved. I learned that it is not necessarily a bad thing to not be involved with something other than academics. This was an important lesson for me because even though my involvements were a positive impact on me, it is not that way for everyone. A lot of our students saw how excited I was about the things I was doing and ended up joining a lot of the things I am involved in, which was great to see them at meetings and such.
I included this evidence to show an amazing flyer of an involved student and to show just how important getting involved is. It can change your whole college experience and in my opinion it has made my experience a great one.
